Orange ants sighted, need identification help please (pics inside)

This is the strangest ant I have seen in my area so far(North Carolina).  Just behind my house under a rock there were a few of them, and they scattered down a hole fast.  Alot of strange egg looking...

That is a Lasius species. A few more side views exactly as you have up there would be helpful, at least for me. The key to identifying anything in that genus is the maxillary palp, the antennae-like...

Wow, color me impressed. That is exactly what I saw under that rock. I will walk back there tomorrow and collect another worker or two for some photos. I have a better camera for the time being. The...

Re: Orange ants sighted, need identification help please (pics inside)

These aphids are grouped together by the ants over winter and dispersed out to feed on root sap around this time of year. They, and thus the ants, need live roots to survive, so this ant-aphid...

Re: Orange ants sighted, need identification help please (pics inside)

Went by there, and yes they have a very lemony smell once they get moving around. Lots of colonies around in that area, under rocks. Some have the aphids on the rock bottom, most do not though. Would...

Is this the one you mean? http://www.anthillwood.co.uk/meadowants2.htm Lasius Flavus. Looks very much like them and I have seen pictures around where they keep aphids as well.

Re: Orange ants sighted, need identification help please (pics inside)

Correct they do look similar. But I don't think your ant is in the flavus group. At least not without better pictures. Here, you can see in a previous post I've listed all the species in North...

Re: Orange ants sighted, need identification help please (pics inside)

I don't think L. flavus emits the citronella odor. It might be a Lasius (Acanthomyops) sp. I would guess probably L. interjectus, since it has fewer hairs on its hair and abdomen. My next guess would...

Re: Orange ants sighted, need identification help please (pics inside)

From looking around I would have to mark out interjectus, unless I a missing something on them. They are also called, Large Yellow Ant, and workers are 7 mm in length on average. These fellas are...

Re: Orange ants sighted, need identification help please (pics inside)

7mm long? I would say they are 5mm at most for Lasius interjectus. A slight issue that's worth noting is when all the North American species were described it was generally assumed that many of them...

Maybe I will stay away from the orange ants. It will drive me nuts not knowing what they are. I guess if I find a queen, we will take it from there but I am not going to actively look. Did some wise...

Doesn't sound like the same ant, John Wagner. These live strictly in soil, and only occasionally appear in basements, but not above ground level. Try to get some pictues and start a new thread to get...
